A convention, an exhibition and a twinning to celebrate 50 years of the Vernaccia di San Gimignano appellation

The Consorzio della Denominazione San Gimignano will be dedicating the 7th of May to the celebration of Vernaccia di San Gimignano with three events: at 9.30 a.m., the Convention “A cent’anni” at Teatro dei Leggieri in Piazza del Duomo, at 4.00 p.m. at the Rocca di San Gimignano, the twinning with Vernaccia di Oristano and Vernaccia di Serrapetrona, followed, at 4.30 p.m., by the inauguration of the photographic exhibition entitled “1276 – 1966 – 2016 Documenti e Immagini della Storia della Vernaccia di San Gimignano” [1276 – 1966 – 2016 Documents and Pictures of the History of Vernaccia di San Gimignano].
On the 6th of May 1966, issue 110 of the Official Gazette published the awarding of the denomination of origin to Vernaccia di San Gimignano: it was the first Italian wine to obtain this appellation. This completed the implementation of the Italian Presidential Decree dated 3 March 1966, the first application of Law 930/1963, which established the institution of the denomination of origin for wines.
Fifty years later, on the 7th of May 2016, the Consorzio della Denominazione San Gimignano celebrates the anniversary with the convention “A cent'anni”, followed by the photographic exhibition on Vernaccia di San Gimignano, “1276 – 1966 – 2016 Documenti e Immagini della Storia della Vernaccia di San Gimignano”, and the twinning with the other Italian Vernaccia wines, from Oristano and Serrapetrona.
The convention has the same title, “A cent'anni”, as the market research carried out for the Consorzio della Vernaccia di San Gimignano by Alberto Mattiacci – Full Professor of Economics and Business Management at Rome’s La Sapienza University, Department of Communication and Social Research – which will be presented at the event. The title is by no means random, aiming to highlight how, during the fiftieth anniversary, the territory and all the producers look to the future of the appellation, building it up and continuing on from the work carried out during the first fifty years of life. Starting from an established fact: the importance of the appellations to tackle the challenges of the global market.
At the convention presented by RAI journalist Pietro Di Lazzaro, to which the Ministry for Agricultural Policies, Maurizio Martina, was invited, Professor Mattiacci will be joined by the Consortium Chairwoman, Letizia Cesani, Prof. Michele Antonio Fino of the University of Gastronomic Science of Pollenzo, the Chairman of Federdoc, Riccardo Ricci Curbastro, and the Chairman of Assoenologi, Riccardo Cotarella. The session will be closed by Regional Councillor Marco Remaschi.
At 4.00 p.m., at Villa della Rocca, the three Italian Vernaccia wines, San Gimignano, Oristano and Serrapetrona, will be twinned, with speeches by the Chairman of Siena Chamber of Commerce, Massimo Guasconi, Oristano Chamber of Commerce, Pietrino Scanu, and Macerata Chamber of Commerce, Giuliano Bianchi, which will be followed by a tasting of the three wines twinned.
The exhibition which the Consortium, in conjunction with Associazione Strada del Vino Vernaccia di San Gimignano, has dedicated to the 750 years of the appellation: “1276 – 1966 – 2016 Documenti e Immagini della Storia della Vernaccia di San Gimignano”, will be inaugurated at 4.30 p.m., also at the Rocca di San Gimignano. The exhibition has been curated by former mayor of San Gimignano, Marco Lisi, who is going to cut the ribbon together with the Consortium Chairwoman, Letizia Cesani, the Chairman of Strada del Vino, Luca Massi, and the mayor of San Gimignano, Giacomo Bassi.
