Consorzio del Vino Vernaccia di San Gimignano, back to the roots
On Thursday 26th April 2018, the Meeting of the San Gimignano producers unanimously approved the new name of the Consortium, which returns to be Consorzio del Vino Vernaccia di San Gimignano, the same that was given at the time of its establishment in 1972.
The name had been changed by its members in 1993 into "Consorzio della Denominazione San Gimignano", when the scenario was very different from the current one, with the aim of underlining 'the territory' of production more than the name of the wine. The ambitious project was to make the Consortium the institution for the protection of the entire agri-food production of excellence of the "San Gimignano hill", not only of the Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG and San Gimignano DOC wines, the latter being an appellation of red wines (today also rosé and vinsanto) that would be born after a few years and was under discussion at the time, but also of the DOP oil, DOP saffron, and of any other traditional gastronomic products that could have obtained the protected appellation.
Only a few years later, however, the European legislation established that the Consortiums for the Protection of Wine had to be exclusive institutions of this sector, so the Consorzio della Denominazione continued to carry out its activity exclusively with regard to the Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG and San Gimignano DOC wines.
In all these years the Consortium has maintained that name even though in external relations it has always been identified by everyone with Vernaccia di San Gimignano. So today the Members' Meeting, on the proposal advanced by the Board of Directors, decided to make explicit its main objective in the name of the institution, that is protection, promotion and enhancement of the Vernaccia di San Gimignano Wine.
The name of the Consortium has changed but certainly not its activity.
