Irina Guicciardini Strozzi becomes President of the Consorzio del Vino Vernaccia di San Gimignano, 2019-2022

Following on three consecutive terms by Letizia Cesani, the Consorzio del Vino Vernaccia di San Gimignano welcomes another woman as incoming president covering the next three-years.

The Board of Directors elected by the Shareholders' Meeting of 28 May held their first official meeting yesterday. Among the items of business was the election of a new President, and the choice fell on Irina Guicciardini Strozzi. At the age of just over 30 years, Irina is a graduate in Business Administration with specialisations in Financial Administration and Auditing from Bocconi University of Milan, with work experience at the European Commission, JP Morgan Investment Bank and KPMG Auditing. During her university studies she continued her responsibilities with the family wine estates, Tenute Guicciardini Strozzi, headquartered at the Cusona estate in San Gimignano. Since 2014 her sole focus has been the winery, particularly the representation of the label on foreign markets.

Apart from this impressive curriculum, Irina has solid family connections with the Consortium. She is the daughter of Girolamo Guicciardini Strozzi, one of the original signatories of the Vernaccia di San Gimignano application for Denomination of Controlled Origin. With the success of that request in 1966, this territorial wine became one of the very first DOCs in Italy. Her father was also among the founders of the San Gimignano Consortium in 1972 and first President until 1987, then again from 1993 to 2000.

In her post-election statement, the new president commented: "For me this responsibility represents a double honour. The first is continuing the precedent set by Letizia Cesani as a woman presiding over the Board of Directors of a wine consortium ‒ in a sector still largely masculine. Secondly, it's a great honour for me to continue a family tradition. My father and family have always believed in Vernaccia di San Gimignano, in its importance for our local territory, but also for all of Tuscany and Italy. With its unique and centuries-long history, and the fact of being a white wine in a land of reds, all of us are aware that this makes our product an engine of economic growth and the lever for launching further growth. In view of this, the aim set by the entire Board of Directors is to grow our name, to bring the wine and the varietal the full recognition they deserve.

My father was the first President of the Consortium, so Vernaccia di San Gimignano is in my genes. But it's not just me that believes: we all believe in this."

The May 28 meeting also elected two Vice-Presidents: Nadia Betti and Manrico Biagini, both holdovers from the outgoing Board of Directors. As a whole the Board is profoundly renewed, with nine of 13 directors entering their first term of office, almost all very young. The continuation of past members in the roles of Vice President gives a strong indication of the intent by the entire Board to advance along the well-established path of great results for the Denomination and the whole territory.

The 13 members of the new Board of Directors are:

Davide Ancillotti - Cantina Sociale di Certaldo

Nadia Betti - Azienda La Lastra

Manrico Biagini - Azienda Signano

Lisanna Boschini - Azienda Collemuccioli
