The connection between the Cecchi family and San Gimignano dates back to the end of World War II. In fact, it was during this period that the family found refuge in the hills of this enchanting Tuscan town.
The feeling that this was an area perfectly suited to high-quality winegrowing convinced
the family to embark on producing Vernaccia di San Gimignano.
In 1988, the family purchased Castello Montaùto, which stretches, together with the village of the same name, along a picturesque ridge a few kilometers from San Gimignano.
The usual attention to environmental impact and the desire to get the best out of the available land led the winery to plant 48 hectares of vineyard on 82 properties. Naturally, the protagonist is Vernaccia di San Gimignano, and starting from 2013 another great appellation is produced in the estate, Chianti.
The vine plantings are modern and high density. This lowers grape yields on a predominantly clay soil matrix that would tend to favour quantity to the detriment of quality.
During the restoration of the antique village, the winery provided for the construction of a winemaking facility suitable for maintaining the integrity of the grapes brought into the cellars during the production process, guaranteeing the perfect preservation of the grapes’ aroma, which tips the scales towards wine of high quality.
