Consorzio della Denominazione San Gimignano

Consorzio della Vernaccia di San Gimignano, later named Consorzio della Denominazione San Gimignano, was set up in 1972 to ensure the correct management of the appellation Vernaccia di San Gimignano, this being the first Italian wine to achieve DOC (Denomination of Controlled Origin) status, in 1966.

Right from the start, the Consorzio pursued three fundamental aims: to enhance the value of the appellation, to defend the Denomination of Controlled Origin and to carry out research and development relating to product quality.

With all this in mind, the Consorzio worked so that the Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOC attained DOCG (Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin) recognition in 1993. The promotion of the brand is pursued through marketing activities that increase the knowledge and dissemination of Vernaccia di San Gimignano Docg and San Gimignano Doc throughout Italy and abroad.

In 2012, the 40th anniversary of its establishment, Consorzio della Denominazione San Gimignano was awarded the Erga Omnes for Vernaccia di San Gimignano Docg and San Gimignano Doc, which envisages the extension of the institutional tasks to all the users of the appellation, whether or not they are members of the Consorzio.
